Mme Deminion class spelling bee date to be announced later in the year
In preparation for the Sarnia Spelling Bee, Errol Road will be hosting it's own spelling bee again this year.
5 representatives from each grade in each class will be competing (classroom spelling bee to be done prior to this date).
Grade 4 students will be competing against other grade 4 students (English and French) for the top 2 spots. The same will go for grades 5 and 6. The top 2 grade entrants will then be honored with the chance of competing in the Sarnia Annual Spelling Bee.
Junior categories of competition:
Grades 3 and 4
Grades 5 and 6
The purpose of the Annual Sarnia Spelling Bee is to recognize academic efforts and to encourage youth to learn to spell in an exciting, fun environment.
Please ensure that each student who is registered as a participant has a copy of the attached rule sheet. Prizes will be awarded to the two top spellers in each category. Winners in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 will be sent to represent Sarnia at the Regional Bee in Chatham.
Annual Sarnia Spelling Bee 2015 Rule List
Each contestant spells one word in a practice round.
After the practice round, the contest begins.
Each contestant comes to the microphone in numerical order.
As soon as one contestant spells a word, whether correct or incorrect, he/she will return to his/her seat, and the next contestant will step forward for his/her turn.
The contestant must say the word to ensure that he/she has heard it correctly, spell the word, and then once finished and satisfied with his/her attempt, he/she must say the word again to signal completion.
If the contestant is unsure of the pronunciation of a word or needs to clarify its meaning, he/she may ask the announcer to repeat the word before attempting to spell the word. The judge will not repeat the sentence in which the word was used.
Each contestant has one minute in which to spell the word correctly.
If a word has a capital, apostrophe, hyphen, colon, or other specific characteristics the contestant must indicate this in his/her spelling. For example, “Ottawa, capital O,t,t,a,w,a, Ottawa.”
Judges will only accept the Canadian spelling of the word from the Canadian Oxford Dictionary.
At the end of spelling, the judge will pronounce the word as correct or incorrect and give the correct spelling.
Once a contestant has made an error, he/she is eliminated from the competition and will leave the stage at the end of the round.
When there are two contestants left in the competition and one contestant misspells a word, the other contestant is given the opportunity to spell the same word. If the speller spells the word correctly, he/she must now spell the next word on the pronouncer’s list correctly to be declared the winner.
If the second speller fails to spell correctly in either scenario, both spellers continue in the next round.
The Annual Sarnia Spelling Bee will continue until there is a first and second place winner.
